The inside front cover of the November, 1983, issue of Hustler Magazine featured a 'parody' of an advertisement for Campari Liqueur that contained the name and picture of respondent and was entitled 'Jerry Falwell talks about his first time.'
Some would argue that pushing the boundaries of what is “appropriate” is what men’s magazine Hustler does best. But its latest cover — which, as Yahoo Style reports, features a woman wearing a hijab made out of an American flag while flashing some serious underboob — is stirring up some major controversy.
The 2017 'anniversary' cover, which was mailed out to subscribers earlier this month, includes the text “Freedom First,” a somewhat satirical companion to the cover star’s controversial attire.
Of course, displaying the hijab on the cover of a men’s magazine — worn by a nearly-naked woman — will be be seen by some people as insanely disrespectful to what the headscarf typically represents. Similarly, others may feel that wearing an American flag as a hijab is disrespectful to the flag itself, as it symbolizes American ideals. Obviously, that was the point of the problematic cover: To stir up controversy, and more importantly, start a conversation about what it means to be an American right now, when political chaos is at an all-time high (thanks, Mr. President). In that respect, it worked: Tons of Twitter users chimed in to share their thoughts on the magazine cover.
So far, Hustler has yet to comment on the cover, except to confirm that it is real. Stay tuned for updates and further information.
